After months of wait and saving finally got the all clear to start planning the upgrade, hopefully will be up and running within the next 1-2 months!
This will be a new home for my 4 Pimelodus Ornatus(quite rare in Oz), Peacock bass(monoculus), Electric blue jack dempsey's, synodontis decorus....the list goes on. Also hoping for a Black Arowana and a Tigrinus catfish eventually

It will be a 8ftx3ftx2ft tall tank, holding about 1400 liters.
I plan on getting one custom made but if something comes up second hand with similar dimensions I will take it to save some money...big tanks are expensive!

Filtration: 4'x18"x18" sump filled with filter floss, scoria or bioballs for biological filtration and then possibly a refugium of sorts with many(100+) plants to help with nitrification, I would like to put some of the myths to test.

Heating: 2x ehiem 300w heaters

Lighting: low light. Most of the fish going in here are wild caught straight from the Amazon (the Rio Negro and Peru mostly) where the water is murky and has very little light. I estimate a single T8 tube in two 4ft lengths. This is what i have in their grow out tank at the moment and seems to work well.

Substrate: Fine black sand

Decor: lots of driftwood, rocks, maybe some tougher plants like amazon swords or anubias. I am sad it won't be planted but everything will get eaten
or torn up. I fear I may have to use artificcius plasticalus...a real eyesore of a plant!
Many aspects are still in planning of course, any input would be appreciated!

I will post a diagram of the sump plan, open to changes if it provides better filtration for the huge amount of waste these fish produce.

Seems like a plan. Keep us posted and pictures of course :)

When planning your decor keep in mind that the Arowana will need the upper region to be mostly unobstructed. They can injure themselves if things are in their way.

A tight fitting lid is a must and be careful when feeding. My Black Arowana gets very excited at feeding time and lunges at the food. It jumped out one time when I dropped the food in and I had to chase it around the floor, we were both a bit panicked. Since then I had a new glass lid made with a 2" feeding hole drilled in it.

Sounds like an amazing plan, cant wait to see it

Sounds awesome. Post some pics and I would like to see some pics of your fish especially your Pimelodus ornatus.

Like everyone, I can't wait to see it!
