Looking to buy a 8x4x2 acrylic aquarium and notice alot are only 1/2" thick . Seems to me that 3/4 would be better but is it overkill or not worth the added expense?

Seen a bunch at 1/2in cause the of the 2ft height. For safety a 3/4-1in would be safer and don’t think it’s an overkill.
Yeah I forgot the 360 8x3x2 I had years ago was 1/2" and remember I wasn't a fan of the bowimg
I don't think it's overkill at all. I had a new tank built that was smaller at 72x30x28 and I could have gone 1/2" top and bottom. Chris advised 3/4" for the sides. I ended up going 3/4" for all. Honestly the additional cost was not much and my OCD likes all 3/4" for the look and safety.
How many gallons is your tank?
I noticed the same thing as OP with all the 24" tanks on fish tank directs. It seems like the consensus here is to spend the extra money for thicker acrylic.
