9 days in the pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine always looked best, and seemed to grow fastest in ponds too.
The sun, and its effect on the algae the cichlids are constantly grazing on.
The Australoheros "ceibals" below were put in the pond as 1" juvie in spring. here they are being pulled out in fall.

They also spent the summer in pond with with a 1" beanii, pulled out the same day.

A pair of Ceibals spawning in the pond.

and a pair of Gymnogeophagus spawning in the pond

as a "Don't try this at home". kids suggestion....
Certain subtropical species do well in ponds, in summer in the north, some don't.
Those species that live in rivers influenced by cool mountain run off, the northern Mexican, or southern South American species do, but "not" .......many northern South American lowland species, or many central American that come from close to the equator where temps are stable.
I killed some C pearsei by putting them in a pond.
Mrs88s Andinoacara come from rivers influenced by cool Andes mountains run off, so 60s, and low 70s water temps are quite par for the course.
Northern Mexican species like Beanii and Herichthys commonly experience cool water temps regularly.
The Uruguayan Gymnos and Australoheros I posted pics of actually do best with periodic cool down temps.
I kept Herichthys and the Uruguayans in unheated tanks, and in my house in Wisconsin, it was often quite cool.

Very nice pictures!
Yes, between the algae, bugs, larva, and natural light it really brings out their colors nicely. I’m sure the constant food and big open swimming spaces help a lot for growth.
I wish they wouldn’t pick on my goldfish so I could keep them outside. I guess nearly 3,000g isn’t enough room for 4 gts to live peacefully with others >.<
