So I'm admittedly a noob at taking good care of my fish (Had a bunch of bettas live forever in fish bowls), and I want to start off on the right foot. I have had my tank for 8 days now, and I have two gold whiteclouds and two whiteclouds, and I was wondering how I go about changing the water. I would just want to do like a 10% change, right? I have the hand pump already, but do I like empty it into a bucket and just pour in the new water? How would I treat like one gallon of tapwater for this??

Thank you so much!!!

prime is a wonderful dechlorinator. other than that you have got the right idea. do it every week at least. match the temp as close as you can.

So how long should I keep the new water out of the tank after I have used prime, or should I pour the tap water in and then use the prime? I'm thinking it the first one, but who am I to say? :-P

You can do it either way actually. I normally add the water to the tank, then add the dechlorinator to the tank. Some people feel better adding it to the bucket first.

Being that you've only had the tank running for eight days, its not properly cycled yet, so you will definitely have to do a water change at least twice a week till it becomes stable.

What size tank do you have? I'd go with a minimum of 25% I actually add Prime while I'm filling the tank up with the new water. But Peanut's got a good point about your tank not being cycled. Since you already have fish, you may lose them while the tank cycles. A Python is a great tool for water changes as well.

i second that. i only have the short part of a python that i got off craigs. but it hooks right up to the hose and right out the door...(set it and forget it) no more buckets for me

I have the 9 gal biUbe tank. In the instructions, it said let the tank run for 48 hours before adding fish, and the guy at my lfs said that I should be fine after letting it run for 48 hours.
