I recently picked up what I believe is a Male umbee from one of my local fish stores. Almost everything points to Male, but this fish is showing a little bit of black in the dorsal fin. This picture was at the fish store , so I'm sure he was stressed out not showing best color. I brought him home and letting him settle in and get comfortable so I can get some better pics. The fish is around 9 inches.
Looking through varius forum posts, some people are saying if a umbee shows any black at all in the dorsal fin it's for sure a female, then I'm also reading posts saying stressed Male umbees can show female traits as well. There isn't a ton of concrete answers online about these, it seems like people making educated guesses at best.
I'm thinking Male due to the heavy bronze colored face with the heavy blue freckles, and it seems like it is starting to get blue coloring throughout the body, and his dorsal fin is pretty long, hard to tell in this picture though.
