I have a 90 gallon 24 inches high. I have old lighting maybe 10 years old. Can I successfully sleep live plants in my tank? The guy at petco (who is an idiot) says no because It's not a strong enough light and says I have to spend $300 on a light set up for it. (Same guy who says nobody should own aggressive fish or feed live feeders?? To a fish). Anyway what do you all think? Will they survive?

Don't trust the guy at petco, it really all depends on the wattage or lumens of your light. How many watts is It?

I don't know I bought it off some guy on Craigslist a while ago. Does it may on the light? And if so what should it be?

not enough info.
you could use a 50 year old light if it was the right kind, and not be able to use a light you bought today.
is it- incandescent? fluorescent? HPS? MH? halogen? LED? neon?
how many watts is it?
without the answers to those questions, no one can answer yours.

It really all depends on the plant selection your looking at, some plants are higher maintenance than others and they need more than others. My suggestion is figure out what plants you want and then that can tell you what you really need to keep them
