Hi all - 1st post so please be kind!

I'm planning on getting a 48" x 24" x18" tank now that I have my own place. I'd like to keep the following fish in it:

1x Oscar
1x male convict
1x Humbug catfish (stripped talking catfish)
and a group of medium sized barbs or similar (4 or 5)

I'm planning on getting the oscar as a young specimen. Will the tank be big enougth for this level of stocking, even when the oscar is fully grown. If not what size tank would I need?

Also I'm planning on (re)using a pond filter box above the tank has anyone tried this?

Should be fine with that setup and stock. Just make sure the barbs are pretty good size when You get them, cause the oscar will grow fast and may eat them. The 90 will be a little small when the oscar is full grown but with good filteration and lots of water changes it can be done. A 125-180 would be better suited for a full grown oscar.

don't see any obvious problems . . . one oscar and one convict is certainly no big stress on a 90G, don't know anything about the catfish tho' . . . does it get big?

platydoras armulatus usually stop growing at about 7" in the typical aquarium. Plenty get bigger and some stay smaller, but expect 6" at least. After about four years!

That should be fine. Some great filtration will help plus your water changes. Oscar will reach 10in quick then slow down in growth. Thats from my experience.

Thanks for your replies. Going on fishluvr12's advice I will see if I can get a for a slightly larger tank, something like 52" x 32" x24" (170 G) as I really don't want to have to change my setup once established.

I'll see if I can get some 5" tin foil barbs (or something similar) and a 5" plus Humbug catfish. So the Oscar doesn't instantly outgrow the others.

After seeing others Oscar setups I was thinking of using a sand substrate, but would the convict be happy with sand rather than gravel?

Should be fine buddy, but like someone else replied, oscars are messy feeders but as long as your filtration is good...you shouldn't have any probs
