Okay so i just purchased and have begun cycling a 90 gallon aquarium for my home. I currently have a 30 gallon already established that is housing a single male jack dempsey around 4" and a common pleco around 4.5". When the tank is done cycling I was thinking about adding a severum, a firemouth, a convict, and potentially a smaller green terror along with my jack and pleco to the 90 gallon. This is my first large tank so I'm not exactly sure where to draw the line in regards to how many fish I can have without overcrowding. Any advice or additional stocking suggestions will be greatly appriciated!

Common plecos can reach easily to 24", so the 90g is too small for it. If you got the pleco as a "cleanup" fish, I would rehome it. If it were me, I would just do JD, FM, and convict in the 90g. I would also make sure that all are males. Females get pretty aggressive when they lay eggs, which can happen even without males present.

I dont think I'd add severum to that tank size and stock, too much aggression and not enough room for it to run away.

Agreed. Sevs tend to be much more mild mannered and won't have the aggression level that the jack and GT will. The firemouth, pleco and convict should be okay though. That tank will be pretty much stocked at that point, but you could potentially add another Central American cichlid that doesn't reach more than 5-6".

i think the pleco would be fine within the tank...although they do tend to reach larger sizes... it shouldn't be that large of an issue..

My current 90 Gallon stock - Mated pair of Jack Dempseys, Mated pair of Nicaraguans, Red Shoulder Severum, Two Super Red Sevs. Little crowded but absolutely no issues and the movement is great to watch.

Jacks are a lot more docile than people give them credit for. The best answer to your question is try what you like, but be prepared to re-home fish if it doesn't work.

I think you'll be fine with that stock & all fish are common & inexpensive, so if you have to rehome or donate one due to aggression, you shouldn't have a problem finding a home for it. Try it and see how it works out.

Its going to take a while for that pleco to get 24in, but like others have said - eventually it will stop eating algae & they produce a TON of waste. You would be better off without it, but its fine for a while.

Okay so I think I'm going to try the list I stated, I have friends who work at local fish stores nearby that will work with me if I ever need to re home or swap out fish so that won't be a problem. I will probably swap my pleco out for some sort of catfish, but I'm really not sure what kind so suggestions would be appreciated. I was thinking of doing a school of giant danios as well. I have around 50 pounds of rock and a lot of driftwood so I will have plenty of hiding places. I also plan to incorperate some java fern, anubis, and possibly some amazon swords. I havn't decicded what I want to do for a tank background yet either, are there any compatible species of fast and tall growing plants that I could plant along the back of the tank?

The sev will likely shred up most of your plants & the jd will tear/dig them up too. Big cichlids & plants doesn't typically work out well. Stick w/ the rocks & driftwood & save yourself some $.
