I've been reading up on the best placement for fish tanks but wanted to see if I could get further confirmation on the best location for my 90 Gallon tank since I've not found another with this particular situation. I'm placing the tank in my bedroom, and currently it is sitting against an outside wall and is next to what I believe another load bearing wall that runs the entire length of the house. Right now it is sitting parallel to the joists which are around 16" apart on a crawl space. So the tank is on basically on what I consider 2 joists (the outside wall and other joist and next to what I'm assuming is a load bearing wall). The stand is made of wood so there is contact on all sides from the stand and not on individual legs. The tank is completely empty now so it would be the perfect time for me to relocate it if necessary. When I walk in front of it it does not move at all. The only time it does move around a little is when I'm walking next to the wall and joists that the tank is on, which I do not have to walk in that area often. Will it be fine there or should I move it to the other outside wall where it will sit perpendicular to the floor joists and still but up against another outside wall?

Without being there to get some more technical info (joist ratings, length of joists and spans, wall locations, etc) it is hard to say. I hate to say that you are good to go without more info, but a 90 gallon tank and stand is typically less than 1000 pounds, I-joists are meant to hold much more than that. It is always safer to run perpendicular, but it sounds like you could be fine where you are. If you have more info, how old is the house, how far does the joist go between bearing walls, how far from the outer wall does your tank sit, then I might feel more comfortable giving a more definite answer.

If your on a weight bearing wall you will be fine.

The length of the joists I'm guessing to be around 12' not been under the house to measure. However they are around 16" apart. When we had the carpet up to put down the hard wood it looked like the first joist was actually around 12" from the outside wall, but I didn't measure so I don't know that for sure. I'm not sure on the other info such as the joist ratings. The house was built in '91. The tank itself will sit around 4-5" from the outside wall. Attached is a picture I drew in paint that shows the layout and may give more info than me trying to describe it. The openings in the black lines are doorways. Hope that gives you a little more info.

Thanks :) that makes me feel better about the location. Guess I'll go ahead and order my plants tonight and start getting everything setup.
