Hi guys, I haven't used an external filter before, but I plan on getting one for my 90g.

Assuming aggression is manageable, the stocking will be:

2 x Oscar
1 x JD
1 x Convict

Water changes aren't going to be a problem, going to invest in python or aqueon water changer so I can shift a large volume throughout the week.

Big question is, regarding the stock, which external could you please recommend? (I am a big fan of Fluval if this helps)

Thanks in advance

Remove 1 Oscar and it could work. As for filtration, it's not nearly as critical as large weekly water changes.

If that's you're long term stock, you are way over stoked. No filter will help change that. And no amount of water changes will help with the over crowding. Just saying.

Interesting replies so far, it's all hypothetical at this stage so the stock is open for welcome discussion along with the external filtration options.

At adult size your 90gl tank is a great tank for a single Oscar and some dither fish. Multiple Cichlids in a 48" tank will eventually lead to aggression. As far a filtration goes (you like fluval) I would recommend a pair of 405's which is expensive you could switch out the 405's and get a pair of these.

A lot of filtration will make life easier with a big Oscar but the real key to healthy O is big water changes and plenty of them.

Good Luck!

I think from the comments I'll be playing it safe(r) and opting for 1 oscar, I still really want the JD and Convict so if that would only work in a 5 foot so be it :)

Thanks for the aquaclear suggestion, I am drawn to either the 405(s) or FX5 though on the basis that they can go underneath and out of sight.

Look at the eheim classic models. They are great filters. I would suggest the combo of a canister and a hob like the Aquaclear 110. I like to put sponges in my HOB filters for mechanical filtration. They also provide bio filtrataion as well. They are easy to maintain and clean. I like to pack the canisters with biomedia. If you put a sponge over the intake they, wont need to be serviced nearly as often. Its much easier to clean a HOB than a canister.
