90g N. American Biotope

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I suggest getting a small school of bullheads, they are very cool to look at when they're in groups. Remember they sometimes (or all the time for me) chew up all your live plants though. Some people don't have that problem with it but I guess it's just me.

Large and small mouth Bass are aggressive.

Sunnies and perch are good fish (boring to me though)

Crappies are a pain at first dealing with food and humans.

Walleyes are cool but very shy and timid, plus need water below 70 degrees.........seriously.

Northerns Pike, if I had a 90 gallon that's what I'd get...

haha I didn't even see that your from Iowa.........I got whole bunch of relatives down there.

I hear that there are striper bass down there........I'm thinking about coming down there to fish for those someday.

First I would ask if you prefer a lot of smaller, active fish or a few larger ones. After we decide this, we'll start making a good list.

If you want to keep the fish for life than I wold not suggest things like pike, walleye, smallmouth or largemouth bass. Stick with smaller species. In a 90g, based on what you listed I would get a a couple bluegill (or one crappie), carefull with the sunfish, they are aggresive and I would get a bullhead or two.

And maybe a couple of stonerollers or mid sized chub.

Bullheads like to be in schools, so get four or more. I have four bullheads, and they've shredded my vals but left my water lily alone. I'm getting some new American vals, so hopefully those will grow better because they are more tolerant of cold water.

Also, if you are looking in to making a biotope, why not add some native plants? American vals, anarcharis, hornwort, water lillies and cow lillies are all commonly availible native plants, and they're all relatively easy to keep (sorry, I couldn't help but suggest it - I really love my aquatic plants).

Then maybe have a sunfish or two, or maybe a school of minnows? They're active and readily availible at any bait shop.

And maybe a couple of stonerollers or mid sized chub.

That's a good idea, they have to be pretty large though because bullhead really will eat anything they can fit in their mouth.

Gein, I don't think 4 bullhead in a 90g is really a good idea long term. If he went with madtoms he could have more.
