I have a 90g heavily planted, currently with a pair of jewels. I am tired of just two fish in there and am considering getting rid of them (Africans seem so aggressive and you can't seem to mix breeding jewels with anything...).
So now I am considering south and central american cichlids... I have 14 giant danios in quarantine right now.

ph runs around 7-7.3

What fish can I put in my planted tank that will:
a) leave my plants alone (eg, no uprooting, shredding, eating, etc)
b) breed without absolute chaos resulting (I have isolation/rearing tanks)
c) add more than a couple of fish

There is a large cave in one corner, some wood, spawning stones in the four corners, lots of plants, and a couple of open spots where they can dig.

I am running in circles because I don't have enough knowledge about cichlids, looking for someone with experience so I can avoid mistakes.

Any ideas?

Angel fish or Discus great in a planted 90

Keep in mind your Jewels are "West African Cichlids" and not "Rift Lake Cichlids" The W African types tend to have a lot more in common with CA Cichlids than they do Rift Lake Africans...

I've kept breeding pairs of Jewels with medium to large SA/CA Cichlids for years and found them to work very well togehter. The natural water parameters of the W African Cichlids is also much closer to that of CA fish than Rift Lake Cichlids.

Although it may be a bit more difficult finding CA Cichlids that are large enough to go with your Jewels that will not damage your plants...

You may have better luck considering SA Cichlids for your set up. There are a number of Geo species that would work well as bottom dwelling fish in a 90 gal that won't disrupt your plants.

There are plenty of schooling fish you could keep to occupy the middle range of the tank such as Tetras and the like. Angel Fish are antoerh option to occupy this region of the tank and will also coexist with the schoolign fish.

As long as you go with more docile fish in the middle range you could also go with a group of surface dwellers such as hatchetfish. African Butterfly fish is another W African fish that could be used as a surface dwelling fish in this set up.

I've kept a few tanks along the lines of what I've suggest here and fond them to be very pretty tanks. I find the social interactions of Cichlids to be more desirable to me, but I cannot deny that the above makes for a very pretty tank...

When I think Of Geos I do not think planted tanks. These guys dig around plants with their mouth sifting for food. SO they could up root them.

If you sell the Jewls you have you could keep many types of peacful dwarfs in a planted tank with no problems. then you could have some tetras, a BN pleco, Maybe some Corys.

Or I think discus would be great if you are up for it. Angles are also good in planted tanks and could be good with discus too.

Personaly I am not a fan of Giant danios I would go with some tetras.
