Could a 90g moderately planted comfortably house six adult discus with room for some schools of tetras? Also is it bad practice to keep angelfish with discus? I am setting up a planted "show" tank for some discus and of course my gf loves black angels. I was considering allowing her to put two in the tank. Thanks

How big are the Discus? What kind of tetras? Since this is your first time with discus I would say no to the angels.

Thanks for getting back to me. This is not my first time with discus. I used to breed them 10 years ago. At that time I kept individual pairs in either 30 or 50gallons. Do to not having enough time I sold them off a year after getting into breeding them. I have never kept them as a community fish. Now that I have free time again I want to make a nice display tank of them. I will be purchasing discus that are about four to five inches, but I have no intention of upgrading the tank.

i would still say no to the angels as its a hit and miss. as for a 90g for 6 discus thats plenty of room. i would suggest you go 5"+ if you can since at 4 inch they can still be a bit sensitive.

because of the planted setup?

If you went with Adults you wont have as much maintenance as if you were to go with Juvies. With juvies you want to do 60-80% water changes daily or would you like to go with Adults and possible do 50 to 80% every 7 to 10 days? Juvies require a high protein with multiple feeding with clean pristine waters to be healthy and acheive maximum growth 6+ Inches!
If you dont mind having small stunted discus then you can go with juvies...

my husbandry is pretty damn good. I can grow out juvies without stunting them. Raising juvies in planted planted tank is considered more challenging though. I will probably ordering from Kenny disucs or discus hans something close to five inches. I have to move all my tanks in a month and then I will fish planting the tank so I can get some discus.

The bigger the better!

with 5 inch i would suggest to do wc every 2-3 days since some strains will still be growing at 5 inch while others will be near max size
