In Your Imagination
Don't Get Excited Just Yet! This Is Just Planning Build Will Hopefully Take Place SUMMER 2008!

Well Right now I have my bid fish in a pool but I want them in a tank! I was planning to build an 8x4x4 plywood tank. I will be switching bedrooms with my mom in order to get it on a foot thick slab of concrete. Some Questions:
  • How much will it end up weighing?
  • Will the slab hold it?
  • What kind of bracing will I need for the plywood?
  • How much epoxy will I need?
  • How thick of glass/acrylic will I need?
  • Is it safe to build inside because it ain't fittin' through that door!
  • What kind of precautions will I need to take?
  • Anything Else?
  • If the glass and epoxy costs too much, will I be safe making it into a pond with a liner?
I am not sure I This will even happen but I want to see it it will work out. I will post a picture of my design later.

  • How much will it end up weighing?
8.33 lbs / gal = about 8000lbs or 4 tons :D
  • Will the slab hold it?
Are you sure it's a 12" slab? If so yes.
  • What kind of bracing will I need for the plywood?
Depends on your design.
  • How much epoxy will I need?
See above.
  • How thick of glass/acrylic will I need?
Again depends on your design (ie just windows or full sides)
  • Is it safe to build inside because it ain't fittin' through that door!
Fumes could kill you, but with the proper ventilation and respirator yes.
  • What kind of precautions will I need to take?
See above
  • Anything Else?
A lot.

What's your skill level and do you have the tools?
  • If the glass and epoxy costs too much, will I be safe making it into a pond with a liner?
If you make the box strong enough, yes no problem, but no=w your back to a pond unless you install a viewing port.

Calculate the sizes of the glass needed and call a local glazier, you don't want to ship this stuff.

We'll work on the rest.

Do a lot of searches on here, many people have already done this sort of thing and it will cut your design time imensely.

Don't forget about filtration too, it will take up a lot of room.

Just the water will end up weighing 3622 Kilos. 3.62 Tonnes. Pretty heavy. Like having 2 Bently's on that concrete.

Im not so sure about the slab holding or not, but most single story houses are built on less than a foot, so perhaps it'll be fine.

4-6 peices of 2x6 wood going across the tank will probably suffice. But you got to keep in mind this is 4ft of height, 1.76psi of pressure.

.5"-.75" of glass/acrylic will be plently.

It should be find building inside the room given that you have the space. There will be wuite a bit of mess so You might wanna put a tarp down whilst working. Protect the floor.
