so after i sit up my 125, I am thinking a living room show tank with Africans, I completaly new on them, but at petsmart tonite i saws some great colors, orange, bumble bee type, blue. anyway i come here to research them and i find out there are 2 lakes in Africa with cichlids. all petsmart says in Assorted Africans. So know i dont know which ones need the powerheads for current and etc.. SO does anyone know what kind of africans petsmart has?

Most likely malawian mbuna. Don't buy from Petsmart, find a good LFS. There are actually many lakes with cichlids in Africa, but the three main are Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria.

Oh I wasn't planning to, I was just confused. I know you can't mix them right. Also after much trouble I found out the orange was ax red zebra. So if I can't mix I want to stick with what ever lake they came from

Tangs are amazing, but it's harder to find them.

Petsmart, petco and those places you will usually only find lake malawi fish and usually mbuna and sometimes peacocks. I would go Tang though. and find a good lfs =) or order online!

thanks guys!, i want cichs and gf wants a pair of discus, yea i know they are the same family, but i want the bit overstocked due to agession fast swimming. after i found they were mbuna, did some research, great fish. I know gf is gonna win :) but space will run low, turning the 75 we have now into a fancy golfish tanks(dont hate) and upgrading the community to a 125. 3- 20 Longs planted and a 15g colum tank.. so i cant have both. I will run out of room for my 300+ tank in the future!!

Why not find a local fish club?

WAY better than a LFS or chain store...

Most folks who find our club (CCA - www.capitalcichlids.org) or web forum have the same mix of bad African cichlids...which, ironically, are the ones available at PetsMart and other chains.

They usually get rid of them and get a better mix with a little assistance from the club.

Yes, clubs are good.
