I used to have a group of Melanochromis auratus but the males proved to be way to nasty and were stressing every one out so I sold the group other than 1 female. Here is my question can a female Auratus take on the male coloration while holding eggs. I thought this was a female but now it is definately holding eggs However it has taken on the male blue striped coloration. Whats the deal with this? My group spawned dozens of times and I never saw a female do this. I am going to strip the eggs and tumble them tomorrow. They have to be hybrids as there is not another Auratus in the tank.

Mabye she is doing that to keep the other fish away from her and her babies! Females can take on male coloration to an extent for protection. you got a pic?

I am horrible at taking pictures. fish wont stay still. My camera has a delay. I stripped 22 eggs off her this morning. tumbling now.

Is her color back to normal now? BTW which fish did she spawn with if you don't have any male melonochromis in there?

She is starting to get her normal color back. I have no idea who the father is I will save the babies and try to figure it out. I have some very interesting mutts in my main tank. I would never pass on any hybrids to anyone else. However I find that some of them are quite interesting. I had a yellow lab crossbreed with a crabro and the male offspring from that looked like labs but when they got angry they would turn jet black for a minute then go right back to yellow.

ohh goodieeee!!!! i hv one male n 2 females.. thy never spawnd :( n im sad :(

how big are they? Do you have plenty of flat rocks for them to spawn on and substrate? Sometimes it just takes extra time but these guys spawn regularly in my tank but I can't get rid of them fast enough as many people are afraid of their highly aggressive nature lol, mine aren't that bad they have been put in their place but some more dominant haps and peacocks lol
