hello! I have a South American Cichlid tank and currently have a breeding pair of Jewel cichlids. They have been breeding for about a year and I am constantly giving the jueveniles to the fish store to sell. I just took about 14 adult jewels out to give to the pet store and when I came home my red dot male heros severum is helping to guard the jewels clutch! It is amazing! The severum is even faning the clutch and chasing the blue acara away from them. At one point, the female was guarding the clutch, the blue acara is in a log tunnel and the male jewel and the severum go on either side of the tunnel and block the acara in!! They were working together and it was simply amazing.

Now if you haven't noticed... I'm saying WAS amazing... Now I think the clutch is about to hatch and the severum keeps trying to guard the clutch and the jewels are chasing him away... It is so sad! His fins are now all chewed up and all he wants is to be a trio with them! I'm nevous because he isn't giving up... He just keeps going back to the clutch!

Has anyone ever seen this before?! What are your thoughts?

LOL... that's wild! Never seen it before... if you can, might want to separate the sev.

BTW... you may already know this, and if so, my bad. But in case you don't, jewels are african cichlids. Not that folks don't keep them with sa/ca cichlids... just letting you know.

Hope the sev can make it long term!

Didn't another member share a story similar to this awhile ago? It was with severums too wasn't it? maybe severums are genetically wired to help other breed :D
