OK, so in my growout tank (30 gallon) i had this stock
-african butterfly fish
-senegal bichir
-albino senegal bichir
-2 x heckelli threadfin
- new peacock bass
-leopard ctenopoma

All are under 3 1/2 inches, so this is whats got me stumped, why in the hell have the senegal, the peacock, and now one of the threadfins are dead and the threadfin looks to be dying. I seperated the cten and he seems to be fine in the QT but the senegal died first, then the peacock, now the heckelli. Only had the peacock less then a week and when i told the LFS guys that it had died i guess about half of them that they sold did so idk whats up with that, maybe it or the senegal had something thats now in my tank?! This is scaring the crap outta me seeing as though ill be pellet training the BATF in the 30 and dont want anything to happen to him!! I was going to leave him, in w/ the thread fins as teacher fish.

So this is about the 4th or 5th time a fish has died from that store in my 30. Completely randomly w/o signs of stress, i mean take a look at my cichla id thread the peacock looked healthy and happy! Even dead it didnt have stress coloring. I have been seeing breeding behavior from my heckelli though, could they be beating on everybody else? I did try seperating the hecks maybe the stress of the seperation caused the female to get to the point its at? The only symptoms shown are losing balance, my cten, african butterfly, albino sen, and other heckelli are fine. Dont get this at all.

My params are fine, the waters at the right GH and KH, PH is 7.5, Nitrate was under 20 this morning before i did a WC ( I always do one after fish death). Nitrite and ammonia are 0.

Can anyone help me out? I havent changed anything about my WC schedule, still once every monday and thursday. Im adding pthos soon just in case this is a water quality issue but i really dont think it is, i keep my water pretty clean. I run an AC 70, appropriate size air pump, and power head.

Also my TV is next to this tank, could this be an issue? Fish don't seem to be in stress colors often, I did just pick up a black cling background for it though hopefully that'll help

That's a little hot.

How much water do you change when you do?

That was only supposed to be for a short time while the peacock was newly introduced, from the LFS I got the fish at that died the ratio of a fish being sick from there vs being okay is about 3:1, about 3 out of every 4 fish from there end dying. Me and 3 of my friends get fish from there once in a while because its the closest place with the kind of fish we like. There were a couple dead fish in the tank w/ the peacock when I got em. So the temp raise and a bit of salt was introduced w/ the first change after the bass was introduced.

I change 30%- 40%, could the heckelli have gotten aggro in their breeding and attacked the others? Although I feel like I would see wounds which I haven't if that was the case.

Sounds like you are buying unhealthy fish to begin with, which is a sure way to get other fish in the tank killed in the process.

It's diffacult to say what or why. I will say all fish should be QTed for about 3 weeks and monitored before being intruduced into an otherwise healthy community. Unhealthy fish can spread unwanted pathogens or parasites theat can kill off existing stock pretty quickly. Improper aclamazation can also cause new fish to die, somtimes quickly or somtimes over the course of several days.

I QT for a few days, i guess i should be doing it for a lot longer haha. And buy from all reputable dealers. All my bigger preds that ive grown out have done well, because they were WC from good dealers like JA and my ornate is an F1 that my buddy got his WC pair from aquascape and nicole says theyre WC. I cant blame these guys for not being able to catch everything though its a 2 man operation father and son and one has parkinsons and isnt doing too well ut still works, thats the only reason i go there anymore just to suppourt those guys. Just gotta stop getting fish there haha. They do have the best prices on hikari around though

Ive never had problems like this in my 70, its annoying haha. I was excited about the peacock, but id rather have a WC of good stock then some random CB. This 30 has been running for over a year now and has never had this problem

heckelii are late maturing to breed. IMO, no way they'd show breeding behavior at under 3 1/2 inches.
they probably need more space.
