Ok, I am a newbee to all this so please forgive anything that is common to some and not to others. My wife just brought home a tank for our daughter. She got it from a friend at work. The so called stand that she brought with her is a piece of trash. It may support the 125 gallon tank, but with a wood box design and only one section that could be mae into a door. I cant have that in our house and wont even have my name connected to it in a garage sale. Its that bad. But the Tank looks real good. Its 72.5 X 18.75 X 23. I was going to build a stand for it tonight or at least get all the lumber. I was going to use that common stand diagram I see all over the place with the multie colored pieces. (if you know what im talking about) but I have noticed that a lot of plans out there have the tank resting on all 4 sides on a 2x4.

My question is:

Down the road I do plan on toying with the idea of a Sump for a freshwater tank and put the heater in it and all and learn about all the different plumbing setups. So with that in mind. I dont see how a stand of the same depth of the tank will fit another 20 or 50 gallon sump under it, because of the 2x4 legs. Is it at all possible to extend the stand "deeper" back? If I did that then the front glass would be on top of the front facing 2x4, and the right and left side would be on top of the 2x4's.... But the long back glass piece would just be sitting on a sheet of plywood and/or Styrofoam. Would that make too much stress on the tank? I was think of adding 3 cross member on top and bottom sections of the stand. But not sure if the long 72" back glass piece would have too much stress points without being under that long 2x4. Any ideas or help would be great. I was hoping to get the lumber tonight, but really dont want to rush anything. Thank you all.

The stand design showing the multiple color parts is from Reef Central and is the same design I used for my 125G stand build. I added additional 2x4's on the stand bottom frame to support a 3/8" thick plywood panel. I also made the top frame using 2x6's so I could eliminate the vertical posts.

If you need to have more depth in the bottom of the stand because you are undecided on the sump size, you can add additional horizontal pieces the length of the tank to the top frame. Or just use a 1/2" thick piece of plywood on the top of the stand and paint it to prevent moisture from damaging the plywood.
