Bought a 240 gallon off of Craigslist a while ago. I've been very slowly picking up the parts I need to get this baby back in shape, you see, she's pretty rough. I don't ever expect her to be a true diamond, but rather a stepping stone until I can build my pond (have to build the building first).

Issues I'm dealing with:

  1. Six layers of paint (one texturized) on the canopy and stand.
  2. Hard water deposits ALL over.
  3. Terrible ameturish caulking repairs (the person caulked the corners without cleaning them, thus sealing in algae and mulm)
  4. Glass is scratched in many places
At least I did see it with water still inside, so I know it can hold water.

The first time we (me and fellow member Egon) tried to drill the tank to get the 1500 gph overflow from Gl*******s.com installed, Egon's ancient drill press went zap and started billowing smoke.

I was beginning to think I'd never succeed with this old girl, until today. I got the holes drilled (easy as pie, by the way), the overflow installed, the inside razored out (because that's what it took to get the calcium off), the edges taped off and the back painted with three coats of paint. I'll probably need at least one or two more coats.

As you can see I have lots of doggie help.

Look forward to me posting the next steps, which will be:

Dismantle and rebuild of the stand and possibly the canopy (found that the whole bottom of the stand is rotten under the paint). The stand, after its built, will eventually have its own thread. The paint job on it will be completely MONSTER. Nuff said.

Building the RUGF.

Removal of silicone in the corners and re-seal.

Sounds like it will be a good project for ya, would love to see those pics tho

Its been a bit over a year since I started this thread. Getting all the parts together to do this tank like I wanted to has been a real pain in the butt. But taking my time to do this has ensured minimal mistakes happen and that makes me happy.

So, the issues I had to deal with have all been dealt with.

Problem #1 was the many layers of paint. Solution = Rebuild the stand and canopy.
Here's the stand rebuilt. The canopy isn't done yet. I left the doors off the stand until after I get the sump and plumbing done.

See the butt-crack in the middle of the skin? I tried my darnedest to make that disappear to no avail. My solution to that? Dunno yet, but I'll do something creative.. wood carving...

The next problem (#2) was hard water deposits, vinegar/water and many razor blades took care of the majority of it. What I couldn't get off is invisible now that the tank is filled.

Continued in next post...

Problem #3, re-caulk. I SWEAR I will never, ever, ever re-caulk a tank again. Its not that its awfully hard, its a headache. Literally. I had to enslave my tallest friend to work the bottom seals--I just couldn't reach them.

As for problem # 4.. I just dealt with it. Its not too horrible.

Yes, I did say the tank is filled right now. Its not complete though... I'm running an FX5 that was on my 120g and a Fluval 405 that I'm keeping alive for a friend. I need to finish the plumbing and build the sump yet. Here's a few pics of the build process for the RUGF:

Here are the plumbing controls for the return line and UV unit:

Edit: I'm seeing now that the photo uploader has gone batty and is not inserting the pictures correctly here and there. I'll try again later with more pics.

Your stand looks nice. It took me over a year to get my craigs list 210g going, so I know what you are going through.
