This is a infra red thermometer that I bought for checking head temps on my remote control cars. It works great for checking tank temps also. it is within .5 deg. f of my digital aquarium thermometer. This unit is made by Mac Tools but I think any brand would work the same. they are priced from $39 to $150 depending what brand and where you get it.
What is nice about these is you can check the tank temp from across the room ! This is really easy if you have multiple tanks or have trouble reading the little #'s on those glass tube thermometers like I do or forget to plug the heaters in after a water change. Just make sure not to shine the red laser light in your eyes or the fishes eyes !
