Hi guys I have a 75 gallon tank with a few 4 inch polypterus (fish). lately, I have been interested in rare turtles like the pink side neck turtle. What kind of aquatic turle can cohab with fish in a 75 gallon tank for life??
here are my requirements

. Not overly large (8 inches max)
. Not aggresive and will not eat my fish
. Not a picky eater or have special requirements (I'm a turtle noob). only kept a red ear slider.
. pretty, colourful and active
. can be found in most petstores (uncommon the kinda rare)
.Under $100.

Are there any turtles like that??

I live in canada. Can anyone tell me a good online canadian store that sells turtles??

thanks.

Turtleshack.com? Some say are good for prices but nit sure about welfare. I would suggest a MALE Chinese softshell as they are awesome but will kill fish

if the turtle gets the chance to bite it its gonna bite it or eat it. Only time befor it happens. I would love to have a side neck in my tank. But cant

Stay away from Turtleshack. Take a look at what they sell as housing for turtles. Take a look at the turtles they sell at WAY under 4". It is illegal to sell a turtle under 4" and the so called turtle habitats are children's toys. I keep a turtle and have always gotten pissed off looking at that site.

If you want a turtle, I would recommend getting a larger tank FIRST. I would try to get at least a 125. Only because a turtle takes up a decent amount of space, then you are going to be adding in fish.

With most semi aquatic turtles the males stay smaller maxing at about 8". The females can get much larger.

I would recommend KingSnake.com to find a turtle.. most of the places are pet shops that post, but you can find some individuals that post on there as well.

As for a turtle to keep with fish.. that's going to be kinda tough. I know FRTs you can, but they are expensive and hard to find. I have Diamondback Terrapins, and Map turtles that don't eat fish, but that's very unlikely for them.

You could possible the pink side neck.. I do believe there is someone on MFK here that has one with their fish.

Don't even consider softshells, they should be kept by themselves; very aggressive, even towards each other.

The only turtle frequently kept with fish with few problems is the Fly River Turtle, and they are very pricey and get huge. If I were you, I'd just stick with your fish for now, or set up a separate tank for a turtle :)

Best,
Paul

Diamondback terrapin? They are rare but I do not know how much they will cost by you and you will have to order it online. Check around on kingsnake.com.

DBTs will and often do destroy fish with a vengeance.

There are plenty of herbivorous (or mostly herbivorous) turtles around the world. The problem is they tend to be big, and they tend to be rare in the trade (or almost entirely illegal to own) which makes them quite expensive even if they are available and legal. Some examples are the Yellow-headed Temple turtle, pig-nosed turtles, and podocs. These are omnivorous, but eat very few if any fish. You're not going to find any semi-rare turtle for $100, nonetheless one that certainly won't bother your fish. The best bet is to get a clumsy one that can't catch them.
