Hey guys, need your help once again. Looking for pics of Festaes and Uro's.

I'm writing a small article highlighting techniques used to differentiate these two species. Juvenile pics are good, as are adult pics. If you wish to have one of your pics used in my article, post away. I will gladly mention your name.

- Does anyone have any pointers besides the Y-bar and the Caudal spot? Those are the only two differences I've noted, ah, and the less intense coloration of the Uro's, but of course that can vary.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Matt

Uro's colors tend to have a dull washed-out look whereas Festae's colors are more vibrant. Another thing is that with Uros, I don't think you can differentiate male from female by a half black/blue dorsal fin. Festae grow slow and Mayans more quickly. I think Mayans have adapted to navigate through saltwater for short periods of time.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope it helps a little.

here is a picture of Mayan Cichlid. I believe its a male at around 6inches or so. Feel free to use my images.

Well, you have noted the main differences...By "small article" I think small is the size of your post....The spot, Y bar, Color, and just the fact that they do not look alike...Do you even need our pics? Not much of an article to be written.

One thing of interest is that the fish farmers refer to the Uropthalmus as a Red Terror...which confuses the issue even further. I was collecting with a guy who owned a fish farm in Florida. In conversation this piece of information popped up. Interesting. So the folks who see "Red Terror" at the LFS are in fact getting just that...but it may or may not be the A. Festae...and more than likely the Uropthalmus.

Here are a couple of my juvie festae, here in Milwaukee the term Red Terror has been used for both species for years in LFSs.

It has been suggested that spangling in the unpaired fins is a male trait.

Great pics everyone! I appreciate the help. Once I'm through with the text I will be selecting pictures. I'll PM you if I decide to use one of your photos. Thanks!

Oh don't you worry about that bro, I am the king of filling "space" when writing papers/articles. I took a lot of writing classes in college and it's not to hard to turn a few sentences into a few paragraphs when you know how to word things. :D

But seriously, I will have a brief description of each fish, physical characteristics, tendancies of max size, coloration, and obviously note the differences. I'll also mention a bit about their confusion in the aquarium trade, and I will definitely mention the bit about what MO said. It won't be long, but it will be long enough. :)

my pair with tons of fry, when they're breeding shown darker colors. the male is the bigger.

now they're free swimming in 75Gal (August 15th)

they're always jump out of the water for food, that's why i kept the aquarium with low water level.

the same male but younger.

this uro grew up very fast, I traslate this fish to another aquarium, because he was eating the others.
