i've been researching DYI stands and canopies for my 125g, 72x18 footprint.

for the stand do you guys usually make the stand to pretty much exactly fit your tank on it or a bit longer and wider? i have a 75g/90g stand for my 55g and i like it b/c it feels sturdier since it has the extra width. i was thinking of making the stand 74x22 with a 1/2-1" think piece of plywood for the top then a piece of foam under the tank.

for the canopy/lighting where can i find a parts list needed and wiring diagram? im not a electrical wiz and i dont want to burn my apartment building down. im wanting to do t5 or t8 lights so im headed to home depot to get an idea of what i'll need.

I am actually looking into building a stand for my 125 gal also. 72x18 footprint also. Have you found any plans for making one? If you have would you mind sharing? My tank right now sits outside and the lady of the house wont let me bring it in until I have a proper stand for it. She said either build one or buy one. So its still sitting on the back porch in the rain lol.

For lighting i was going to make my own out of led's instead of florescent tubes. I found a wiring plan for a moon light kit out of led's so it wouldnt be anything to change the led's to make normal lighting.

my stand is made to fit the 125 exactly. the extra over-hang looks weird IMO. and as long as you have a strong frame that wraps your tank's edges your ok. in fac, i think having the proper sized stand is better than one thats bigger because of this. and the only compensation you need to have for your foam is a higher lip.

heres a site with ballast configs to your liking. just use the right side of the page to find what you want ( i.e. t5 HO or t8)
