i was walking through the pet store and a small 3" jag caught my eye. he had a whole little feeder in his mouth. i instantly fell in love. how fast do they grow? Also can they be kept with other fish or not? if so what kind of fish dont you reccomend? Also how big of a tank would be good for one? and do they need a water heater?

yeah they definitely need a heater they aren't goldfish. they can be kept with tankmates but i would keep one with tankmates in anything less than a 125 or 150g tank, for one by itself it would still need around 125g footprint to be comfy, these guys are more territorial than anything, so as long as he feels he has enough space he will most likely keep to himself, for more than one cichlid tankmate you would need more likely a 150-180g tank with larger being preferable, females get about a foot while males get about 14-16in with 18in being possible but unlikely. also i wouldnt reccomend feeder goldfish as they are very unhealthy, live insects are a much better choice if you want to feed live foods as treats

i agree though i think that a pair could be kept in a 125g though of course a 150 would definitely be better. i would keep them at about 78-80 as with most cichlids, and a single male you might be able to get away with a 90g but that would really be a bare minimum and there could not be any other fish in the tank. they are also fast growers and 1in a month if not more is a normal growth rate for them when they are young, and thats good about you breeding your own feeders, but make sure they are a more nutritious fish like guppies or another type of cichlid or something, and make sure that they are still only a treat, pellets are really the best staple for them to have a balanced diet and jags are very easily hooked on feeders so i would stick with mainly pellets and other foods while they are still young and add in the occasional feeder as they get larger and are already accepting a wide variety of foods

I have a pair in a 75 gal. I have a 125 for them that they will go to in a year or so. The male is 10" and the female a little smaller. They are swimmers so the more room the better. They are in no way crowded at there size in the 75. I feed mine Hikari bio gold + for carnivorous fish and frozen Krill once a week. I bought them at around 6" a year ago. Also they may grow at a descent rate but it will take years to reach there full potential. I keep my tank a 80F. They are entertaining as pair.

well yea. i saw them and ive wanted one forever. the ones at the store are about like mabey 3". i would like to have mabey 1 or 2... i am thinking on getting a metal stock tank with 6'x2'x2' think that would be good for 2 of them?

yes a pair would be quite comfortable in that foot print, i would get several young juvies and grow them up together and allow a pair to naturally form and then re-home the extras

ughh i dont know about that one... because i dont know anyone who would want them...i think i may just get 2 and grow them out then put them in.
