I've been hooked on portrait photography lately and we all know that people are the hardest subject to photograph! Lighting for portrait work is crucial as this will make or break the photo.
I picked up this EXCELLENT book and it has some great discussions of using on-camera flash pretty much all the time. natural light is great, but 98% of the time you will need some sort of flash to make the picture. if you shoot people at all, i highly recommend this book:
these shots dont consist of any cool poses, but i really like the lighting. first up is my nephew while we were having lunch. gelled my SB-900 with a full CTO filter, bounced 90 degrees towards the ceiling.
here's what the filter looks like on the sb-900:

here's a good example of why you need flash almost all the time!!!! first shot was taking in front of a big water feature using available light only. i then turned on my SB-900, but i didnt want to aim the flash directly at the subjects (my mom and her husband). so i looked around, found a large white support column at my 7 o'clock position and aimed my flash head at it. the result is a shot with very nice natural looking fill flash with no harsh shadows and reflections on the skin!!

and some random night shots from vegas this past weekend
