I have a spare ten gallon tank laying around at home and wanted to bring it down to school next semester. I wanted to stock it with 2 or 3 puffers and a few neon tetras, and two or three corydoras. Sand for a substrate with a small piece of driftwood and some fake plastic or silk plants.

What kind of puffers would, if any work because i have seen green spotted puffers kept in under five gallon tanks very routinely, and by some very experienced fish keepers. If not would Indian Dwarf Puffers work?

All help is appreciated, if this set up is doable it would be awesome, if not, completley understandable and i'll definately find something else to stock it with.

Thanks.

Honestly i hate to be the bearer of bad news. But what your saying is setup for complications. No puffer can fit in a 5 gallon tank in my opinion. On top of that, a lot of puffers will likely eat your neon tetras and or the corydoras. Puffers are very aggressive, even to their own species. Green spotted puffers cannot be kept in a 5 galllon despite what you seen. It likely was very unhealthy, they need brackish water, eventually salt, and can reach up to 6 inches. Based on what you said, my advice would be to get just a 10 gallon with your sand/driftwood setup and get dwarf puffers, im not sure about their aggression to each other. Maybe someone else can give advice on that? But goodluck, I saw a dwarf in the store the other day, real cool little things!

IME they do not play well with others ..... especially those that fit in their mouths

I am planning on using a ten, and will definately look into the dwarfs then, and scratch the neons, I didn't know much about the green spotted, so thank you very much.

Devin did say he has a 10g. I do agree with the rest of the above advice. No "experienced" fish keeper would ever keep a GSP long-term in a 5g tank. You could go with 1 male & 2 female DPs & 3 otocinclus cats in there. You must fishless cycle the tank before you stock it with puffers.

Puffers can easily bite chunks of flesh out of fish 20x their size.

Thank you Pufferpunk, i think something along those lines is what i will go with. I know the whole fishless cycle and if'ts what i have used the past five or six times when setting up a tank. shoudl i ask for some hitchhiker snales to stick in there and let breed for them, also would five or six ghost shrimp be good also, i plan on a good few hiding spots for them to hide and if so give them time to breed to keep a constant supply for the pufferers.

also breeding, do i have to worry about it if i do get the male and two females, I dont have the room for fry, but i could always make some, i just dont want to have to worry about it.

You could always try for 3 females then. Snails won't last long in their tank.

yea.
green spots would never work in a 10
and also need marine water as they turn adults.
two dwarf puffers would be fine.
but im not sure you can keep em with neon tetras.
they will nip fins or kill them
