I just picked up a Black Mask Elongatus yesterday, he was a MEAN little guy at the store, about 5 inches of anger. In my 75 at home, he is the only fish in the tank. The LFS guy said i should try to feed him the first day, they were out of goldfish so i picked up 3 clean platys. Apparently he ate one while i was asleep, but the other two just swim right by him. He is not active at all and is still sitting behind the same rock or piece of wood as he was yesterday. Anyone have any advice about this?

Also:

is 78 the right temperature?
can you feed them meal or super worms? (just to vary the diet)

Normal behavior. Up to the temperature to 80-82 and give it time. find a diet that doesn't consist of mainly live fish. Check out this thread

right here

Awesome thank you. Yeah I wont be feeding him live food very often but it is a nice treat and it makes them more aggressive. I've always been an advocate of giving your fish a very differentiated diet.

You've had it what 2 days? Lil early to be talking about treats since i'm sure that's mostly what it was fed in the pet store, not because it's good for the fish or makes it more aggressive, but it's cheaper and cost efficient for them, especially if the feeder is already dying.

However, it's probably a good idea to feed it what it's use to before you start converting to a different diet.

Feeders are nice because normally you can spot if they are gone. So unless it somehow commited suicide or is a ninja fish the piranha has more than likely ate.

this will be my last broken record post. If you're going to feed live fish, pick a species that doesn't have thiaminase. Platy's are fine, I'd recommend breeding them yourself.

I'd love to see some pics of this BME if you take some.

i think that is normal elongatus behavior because mine does the same thing. he just sits in the corner facing me swimming mid tank.

Well I would never feed them just feeders. Actually the fish store fed them silversides, which I just picked up a big container of today. I might be getting a breeding tank soon so I can breed high quality food for this guy. I'm still curious about feeding them meal or super worms though, just to add some variety. I know that a lot of people pick up containers of earth worms and feed their p's those for a while too.
