Hello,

I have decided to get some German Blue rams for my 46 gallon bowfront. The tank has been cycled, and all my water parameters are now perfect for the rams.

I was wondering how many I should get?

Also, are their any good tankmates for rams?

Should I use sand, gravel, or no substrate?

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Get a good male to female ratio (less males than than females) I would do 4 (1m x 3f) in a 46g. Keep in mind that these guys needs lots of heat. I have never had luck keeping them healthy in temps less than 82 degrees (optimal is 81-84 degrees). That should be your main focus on what tank mates you choose. Substrate will not matter as much as clean water. These little guys are really sensative to nitrate so lots of WC's are a must. I like mine in sand though as I prefer it for all cichlids.

Just thought about this as well. Tankmates, dwarf pikes. Crenicichla Notothalmus is a great tankmate as they have similar temp requirements, stay small and are beautiful. I kept mine with Corydoras Sterbai with no issues although they prefer cooler temps (78-80 degrees). Oh and plants, plants, plants!!!

I would second the sand as it is easier to keep clean.

I keep my Rams with other dwarf cichlids, various loach shoals and some gourami's in a 60g. They get along with everyone fine.

Sand, plants and I would say 2 males to 8 females
