So I've had a tank with a breeding pair of bristlenose pleco's for a couple years now and they are steady producing fry. So I was thinking of upgrading to fancier pleco of the same general size (so far it's between the l134 and l260). So I was wondering how much more sensitive are they than bristlenoses? if I bought 5 or 6 would I pretty much be guaranteed a breeding pair? or could I just get a male and 2 females? do breed just as easily as the BN plecos? I am not an experienced breeder by any means.

A group of 6 would give you more chances of a spawn as apposed to just 4 or a trio. No other plecos breed as readily as the bristlenose.

I would get a group, setup the tank with several caves and hiding then leave them alone. The more you disturb the tank or have to move this around the less of a chance that they will be comfortable enough to breed.

It can be a long process if you start with smaller fish. Patience is key. Goodluck
