just had a few questions if anyone can help. last summer we were fortunate enough for a guy i knew that had a new batch of several red bellies and we picked up 3 of them from him. only had a 30 gallon tank then so i didn't want to get more than the 3. being in texas, they are awfully hard to come by. they were about 1/2 inch in size back then in july i think. they are now about 3.5 inches in a 55 gallon tank.

2 1/2 months ago though, one of them stopped eating and got sick. he didn't make it. so now we only have the 2 with a red belly pacu in there as well. the remaining 2 never got sick and are as healthy as can be.

i'd like to get a couple more now. my 1st question is this. can i successfully add a few more without worrying about the size or age difference (providing i can even find any more here)? if so, do i need to do anything special to ensure the new ones survive in the existing tank?

2nd question: we will be making a trip to memphis this weekend where i think they are legal (if anyone knows for sure whether they are or not for the memphis are, i'd appreciate it).

anyhow, we thought about trying to pick some up from a local fish store there in the area. but we will have about a 7-8 hour trip back home to dallas. what would be the best way to transport them? i was thinking of just bringing along a 10-15 gallon tank with some cycled water from our rbp tank in the car and setting up a filter to run from the cig lighter. will this work? or should i do something different? is there anything special i will have to do to get them all the way back home? maybe add some stress coat in the tank or something to keep em from flipping out on the trip? i've never transported fish for more than a 30 minute trip before so any advice is greatly appreciated.

3 inches in 8 months?!?!?!? WTF?
they should grow an inch a month o_O

anywho, try to get as many as you can, the more you have, the more comfortable they will all be (unless u keep them in a 30 gal ). get a battery powered air pump, a bucket, and a huge plastic bag to keep them in. the filter probably wont be necessary, their not going to be eating and pooping that much o_o.
the water doesnt even have to be cycled, just make sure theres no chlorine.

i used to have 3, they never moved, but i added 4 more, and check this vid out.
its them recently, and look at how much they move.
before, they hid all day.

cool. thanks for the advice. that was supposed to be a 5. dunno what i was typing. they are about 5.5 inches. but they certainly haven't grown an inch a month. i really do hope they sell them there. the map in the other post said they were legal in tennessee, but someaid that map is old. we'll see soon enough i suppose.

think i can successfully house 5 plus the 1 pacu in a 55 gallon?

wish mine were that active. guess they do need some more buddies. :)

I wouldnt put no more in the 55gallon. 3 in there with the size protental they have you will run in to problems sooner or later. If your going to add more you want them to be near to same size as ones you already have, and you want to give as much room as possable (Ie bigger tank). Also move all the tank decor around to minamise territory disputes.

well, we got some more from lfs's in memphis while we were there. and they survived the 7-8 hour trip back to dallas. got one big one about the same size as the ones i have and 4 baby ones about 1.5 - 2". one of the babies got bit during transport and didn't make it but 1 day after we got home. his stomach was bit open. anyhow, the 3 remaining babies are sectioned off in the tank with a tank separator and are doing great. as is the big guy we got too. we'll be looking to upgrade out 55 gallon to a larger tank by the end of summer. but right now, i think it's plenty big enough for the fish we have. thanks for the advice.
