Thinking about buying one. Just want some things cleared up first.

1: Is it true they are very sensetive to water quality or are they are hardy to water quality. Are they more towards an oscar or a stingray in terms of water quality?

2: Is it true that these fish suffer from a "sudden death syndrome" once they get to 10" or around that size?

From what I have heard and read, stingrays are not as forgiving of sub par water quality as oscars seem to be but Armatus can be sensitive to high levels of ammonia and nitrates in a tank. The sudden death thing is mostly brought up when the H. Scomberiodes are discussed but they grow at a very slow rate..... the Armatus don't.

Sensitive to poor water parameters, high levels of CO2, and low levels of dissolved oxygen - best kept in large tanks to put the ppm "parts per million" on your side.

Not sure I buy into "sudden death" - in most cases it's ppl trying to keep large sensitive fish in small tanks and feeding them junk food - My Scomb is still alive, kicking, and healthy @ 18 mo. when he was supposed to be dead by 12mo. according to the "sudden death theoroy". Bottomline - Hydrolycus sp. aren't for beginners.

What I have heard is that scombs die at around twelve inches in length, not after being kept for twelve months.

Best kept in the wild as they get too big for the home aquarium and a lot of them also die in the home aquarium due to lack of water movement and improper water conditions.

If it's water movement, then a few powerheads should solve that. I would keep up with water changes.

You might want to cinsider a Tat aka Red Tail Tatua-something Lol...
