Recently have noticed a few small growths appear and then disappear on Darth Vader's right pectoral fin. This has been going on for a few months. They last for a few days then fall off or disappear. Don't show up for weeks then appear again. This week a few have appeared on the end of his dorsal fin as well.

His water is changed 2 or 3 times a week about 75-80% each time. He is currently in a solo 75 gallon (48x18x21) with lots of filtration (two Eheim 2017s, AC110, and a sponge filter, which are cleaned regularly).

I first noticed the spots/growths appear a few months ago after introducing some leaves I had gathered from outside and put in his tank as I usually do every fall/winter. I rinse the leaves off, but not more than that. I am wondering if the spots could be some kind of parasite introduced via the leaves? The fact that they disappear then reappear in different locations makes me wonder this though not sure. I hadn't worried much about them as they don't stress him out and haven't progressed (usually they dissappear and I forget about it) until today when I first noticed them on his dorsal.

The photos are where the spots are now and a short 10 second video to give a better sense of them in "real" time.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments.

Are they appearing on the the cartilage ray of the fins? If so this may be a common thing. It will look like a white node that over time will heal back to normal.

Looks like some lymphocystis spots. Watch and monitor.

Thanks. I did see this and considered it but the appearance on Vader’s dorsal make think it’s not this.

Thanks. Not familiar with it. Looks like there is no cure for it (a virus) but not too serious? Like fish herpes or something like that? Lol.
Yes. Something like that. Get ur valtrex!

Lol. Will get on that.

My other thought is that I may have over used Safe. In Philly where I lived till the end of 2017 the water out of my tap had an Ammonia reading of 0.25 which made me add twice the normal amount as I read that was still safe but helped reduce ammonia. My NYC water doesn’t have that issue at all 0.0 ammonia but I just kept adding the double dose out of habit (mindless I know). I stopped this several months ago, in any case and I just put the normal dose (1/16th teaspoon for 75 gallons) now.

I am wondering if the double dose of Safe might have stressed him out and caused the virus. Never had any issues with him and he’s nearly six years old. Hoping this doesn’t progress any further.

I assume pristine conditions are key to keeping it at bay, but other suggestions would be welcome.

Clean water and eventually should run it’s course.
