After reading over it, it does sound like it would be outstanding for a large tank project, scaled down of course.
So johnptc, your suggesting that this endeavor could be scaled down to a residential unit?
Perhaps we could call it a W/D with a bio-material that wouldn't clog and with a settling tank...perhaps we could use a type of fauna in this settling tank too...We could call it a..a..refugium.

Ok, I got that out of my system.
I looked into this about 10ish years ago and than it wasn't practical for my purposes...Seems like something couldn't be scaled down (very fuzzy memory) I'll see if I still have my notes on it (it's been many hard drives ago).
Your wanting to deal with S/W right?
I seem to remember that there was work being done on an electrical process to remove nitrAte / nitrogen too (again rather fuzzy, sorry).

this is the standard deep bed gravel filter feed with menthanol.....
this can be scaled down for freshwater as done in reef tanks with sulfur as food.......
