i've been reading a lot of threads about large tanks leaking or busting, what is the average life span of a regular aquarium? or rather how long would you keep your tank before re-sealing or selling due to possible issues

Hello; My take has been not to do any thing to a tank that is not leaking. I did not keep records but think that some of my tanks have been in use without issues for at least ten years and likely longer.
I do not recall any real warning signs that would have alerted me to pending leaks in the past. Leaks and failures have generally happened without any warning.
My approach is to try to place a tank so that a leak will not cause additional damage to the house because of the leak itself. I went to the trouble of removing carpet from the area of the tanks in my current home and putting down vinyl tiles. I also placed a barrier of half inch quarter round sealed with silicone along the border surrounding the tank area with a hole in the floor to hopefully give water a place to go.
In 50+ years of tank keeping I have come to expect that the water will make its way out in some manner, not only just from a leaky tank. Most leaks and failures have been of the slow nature with only a couple dumping a lot of water in a short time.
I have gone for very long periods without any water problems, but they can happen without warning.

If a tank has been sitting dry for a very long period of time then I might be concerned about the silicone, but if its been in use then I don't worry about it. In all reality you are more likely to experience flooding from a filter than anything else.

I reused my dads old tank from over 15 years ago (sitting in the garage) and it is still running perfectly (including his old filters) no leaks and no breakages!

My Mom ran her tank for 15 years no problems, I ran mine for about 8 no problems.. 44-75g. Tanks last a long time if you take like every 3 months to get inside and scrub anything that may be on the sides and stuff you will be fine... Make sure your tank is nice and leveled and the stand is properly built and you will be fine.

Interesting question though, the lifespan of a tank,or,it's seal....

id never worry about a tank holding water, most tank failure comes from other things (stuff hitting glass) or when people first fill a tank that has been sitting dry for a long time.
