I managed to get the Cichlid to sit still for more than 3 seconds and took a picture of him. This is my Jack Dempsey, and my question to you is what sex is it? I've always thought it was a male, but the anal fin is rounded and more spots are near the face the older he gets. What is your take?

watever it is it looks really nice

Looks like a male. There is spangling on the lower jaw, but not the full blue that you would expect in a female.

I tried netting him for a better pic but he was to fast my lightning fast reflexes :nilly:

What they never tell you about providing a lot of hiding places for your fish. You can't net them, you can't hardly take pics of them if they are camera shy unless you tear your tank apart.

These were the best I could do, the first shows under his chin more and the second is a little to dark under the driftwood after my net skills failed hard.

I should be able to vent it tomorrow.

I'm leaning towards "male" . . . my male JD had blue spangling on his gills too; I think in a female it would be more of a solid blue . . .

my male JD also had that rounded tale . . .

A very promising male is what I think.

First... that is a super nice JD. ''His'' colors are awesome. Best way to net these guys or other quick aggressive fish is to get him/her on one side of the tank and slide a divide in there. Once you have them locked in behind a divider, if you can, slide the divider over to make less room for them and THEN go in with the net :)

Another tip that helps greatly, is to lower the level of water in the tank. The less room they have to run errr... swim from you, the easier they are to catch. By catching them quicker you also stress them out alot less as well.
