I've been posting here for a few weeks now, so I felt I was a bit overdue in making a formal introduction. My name is Sean Borycki and I've been a serious aquarium hobbyist for a few years now. I'm currently keeping 11 tanks for a total of roughly 700 gallons. I've primarily been keeping rift lake cichlids but am finding my interest drifting towards the South Americans of late. Unfortunately our water is completely inhospitable for the majority of the "really cool stuff" so it makes keeping them fairly challenging.

A list of all the species I'm currently keeping can be found here: http://members.shaw.ca/sborycki/fishlist.html

Now it might not come as any surprise, given the site, that my fish lead me towards photography. After seeing all the wonderful pictures online, and failing to match them despite my best attempts (1,2). I decided to make an investment in a "real" camera and pick up a new hobby. I've had no real previous experience with photography or SLR's until now.

So here I am, toying around with my D50 and shuddering at how much this newfound hobby is going to cost me.

Welcome, to the site and the SLR world. I'd suggest picking up a good photography book or taking a class at the local college if you can, believe me that you're going to want to start pointing that D50 at alot more than your tank in the near future. A good founding knowledge of photography (it's more complicated than you first realize, which is part of why it's so rewarding) will make it possible for you to take great shots whereas just fumbling around will take a while to get good results.

The first thing you're going to want to do is work out your lighting system over your tank. A good lighting/flash setup is the most crucial part of getting good fish shots. Without it, you're going to have a big challenge getting the results you want.

But enough warnings about the work ahead, you're going to enjoy it believe me. It's a really rewarding hobby and the guys here are about the best place you can go to get the shots you want.

Welcome froggie!

Pardon my ignorance, but where are you from? I can hardly pronounce the location.

In any case, you are not the first to lean towards photography as a result of keeping fishes. There's a whole bunch of us here! But believe me, it's addictive and the satisfaction is immense. Hope you enjoy yourself here.

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum, Sean. Looks like a great start from those two pictures. Just keep on snapping away and ask any questions when needed.

I think that's in Canada correct (looking at the "ca" in that URL)?

Ibn,

Yes Saskatoon is a city in the provience of Saskatchewan in Canada. That of course would be this large area of land here. I actually think it's larger then texas for what it's worth :P

And as I said, those two shots are from awhile back with my older camera. One of the more recent is here in the critique corner.
