Hello,

Im new here and I have a few questions. Not really sure where these questions should go if they are not suppose to be here, so if they dont belong please feel free to point me in the right direction. My questions may be rookie like, an thats because I'm fairly new to fish tanks. An just want to be clear before I purchase or think about purchasing something.

1. Are "Powder Blue JD's" the same thing as "Electric Blue JD's"??? If not what is the difference??

2. Im looking for a Red Port Acara, but im not clear as to what the scientific name is for this fish. Does anybody know what it is?? or where to find one??

3. I have a 60 gallon tank that currently houses a Salvini, Green Texas, Convict, JD, Blue Acara, a Nicoaugran(sp?) cichlid that i cant pronounce..lol (beautiful multicolor). I still plan to get a Jag, Pike(not sure which one yet, still looking), and/or PB. I plan to upgrade to a 130-150 gallon tank in the near future. Will this be big enough or should I be looking for something a little bit bigger?

Any help is appreciated...thanks!!

Well, it certainly has the potential to be a dangerous mix.

It all depends on the fishes individual personality if it will work or not, but a bigger tank will definatly help the situation.
If you are able to get a 180 or a 240 i would do that. This way you won't have to upgrade once your obsession becomes even greater, and trust me it will :)

However, a 150 would most likely work out fine, assuming your fishkeeping skills are proper, but you may ofcourse get some casualties, due to it being a predatory and terretorial mix you have.
Provide lots of hiding places by effeciently implementing alot of decor, so the targeted fish will have a place to run to cool off.

good luck with it, and otherwise just keep asking untill you get the answers you want :) There are thousands of people on here to help you out :)

hi there, and welcome. let me throw my own thoughts at you, to use or discard as you see fit:

1) pretty sure "powder blue" and "electric blue" jacks are the same thing; I know at least one website - - www.azgardens.com - - that sells the same fish under both names.

2) the Red Port Acara is cichlasoma portalagrense, but I have never had any luck finding one. I did buy a pair of "Blue Port Acara" from www.cichlidbroker.com about two years ago, and while they are very handsome fish, they are not as colorful as the Red Ports I have seen on-line

3) you did not mention the sexes or sizes of the fish in your 60G, but it sounds like there is high potential for aggression with that number of territorial cichlids in that small of a tank. I would suggest you upgrade to the larger tank as soon as you can, and I would not add the Jag and/or Pike . . . not that it couldn't work, I would simply advise against it

also, one of the general theories on the Blue Jack Dempseys is that they are not as aggressive nor as durable as regular JDs. this is generally attributed to their breeding (they are heavily in-bred) and/or the fact that the EB gene tends to be a weak gene to begin with. EBJDs only seem to occur in captivity, at least in part because the weaker EBJD fry are quickly separated from their larger JD siblings . . . otherwise, they would not survive

I mention this because if you were to introduce a new EBJD into the tank you noted above -- or even a larger 130G tank -- I think it would be at a substantial risk of being bullied and stressed to death

hope that helps

Your texas is going to be the biggest fish and probably the tank boss. The jd and convict could be really aggressive also. As stated above a jag wouldn't be a good idea as they tend to do serious damage to tank mates. I'd stick with the fish you already have and buy the biggest tank you can afford, throw in some dithers, a bunch of hides and rock on! Definitely keep the 60 gal in case your tex. or jd gets too mean, you still have a big enough tank to house an adult fish! Good luck!!

The Green Texas is about 3in/male, Salvini 2in/male, Nic 2in/female, JD 2in/male, Blue Acara 1.5in/male, convict 2in/female. All the fish I have now are pretty small. They all seem to get along fine. But it is clear that the Green Texas is the king of the tank. The others play an chase each other, but no real aggression, or any warning signs that its too aggressive...yet! thats why i was thinking of adding the last few that i want while they are all small, so when the transfer takes place nobody has a leg up on any other as fas as territory or whatnot. Thanks!!

Hahaha..the Texas is already the tank boss, and they are still all babies. Both JD and Convict seem to be pretty chill. But as I stated they are all fairly small, so personalities havent formed yet. Thanks!

THANKS TO THOSE WHO REPLIED...MUCH APPRECIATED!!! ANY OTHER HELP, THOUGHTS, IDEAS, ETC. WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

bump

I had a Green Texas, Female Salvini, and female nic together in 90g. Only worked out till they all got about 4 inches. The Salvini was always the boss and nipped fins alot. Then the Texas started to get mean. The only fish I kept out of the three is the Nic. Just watch there aggression and if it becomes to much trouble might have to give away one or separate.
