I've got a 2 1/2" discus in a 10 gallon hospital tank. His biggest problem is that he's been bullied so much in my 240 g, that he's stopped eating. I saw him eat a tiny bit yesterday. My other discus eat like piranhas. Does anyone know of anything that i can add to the water to help stimulate his appetite?

Thank you

Pat

is he the same size? probably not much you can do other than letting him grow a bit before putting him back with the others.

Up the heat in the ten gallon to the high 80s, 88F or so, and leave it that way for a week. Add an extra airstone to aerate the water, as warmer water doesn't hold as much oxygen. The high heat should bump his metabolism and make him hungry.

Sometimes stressed discus will fall victim to hexamita, intestinal flagellates. If you see white, stringy feces or he stops eating, you may need to treat him for that. It will require metronidazole.

How many fish are in your 240?

I have 16 discus in the 240, all eating very well. The one in the 10 g was/is the smallest of them all. I'd like to get him to eat as ferociously as everyone else. i was considering adding salt and garlic juice to the water.
Thanks
Pat

Pat,

No need for salt right now if there isn't an obvious problem. Try the heat thing first. Garlic is only effective if you use it in the food -- putting it in the water don't do anything.

Try heat for a week and see if he'll eat better. If so, then you can put some garlic in his food.

I saw you posted this at Simply too, but since I already started posting here I'll just keep answering you here. :D

Thanks Ryan,

Last night, he was much more active, swimming all over the tank.
I'll be feeding in a few minutes and keep you posted.

Well, still not eating, but appears normal in all other respects. (alert, active, calm, not sitting on the bottom)
I guess all I can do is wait and keep up with the 50% water changes.

He's the smallest of the bunch thus he's at the bottom of the totem pole.............
