- plan out your whole build and make checklists of what you need
- do research on every little tiny detail to make sure it will all be perfect
- dont buy walmart aquarium gravel
- already decorate your tank BEFORE you put your fish in
- dont do water changes soon after getting new fish
- have a backup plan for your backup plans
- take notes of what went good, bad, and dang ugly.
- look for the best deals you can find online, and check for forum discounts.

ill probably add more to this, but i figured id share my little list of first-timer trial and error :)

adding some more-

- blood worms are VERY messy when they get broken apart.
- an irregular lighting schedule drives my fish batty
- dont give in to the Oscars look of "FEEEED MEEE IM STARVING" when they've practically just feasted
- dont feed your fish, do a water change, and then check your filter within about 30 minutes of each other. lots of fish stress.

and also dont give into the Red Tails look of hunger. I mean, I fed the three of you a big bag of frozen shrimp and you three are still hungry?

12, 11, and 14 inches.

whats wrong with walmart aquarium gravel ?

I bought a bag of white Walmart gravel for one of my tanks and found that after a year or so the colour started coming off. When I used it, I mixed it with a natural river gravel, and though it looked nice at first, now it looks more like crushed coral than gravel. I'm really not sure if it is inert either. The surface is rough and the colour is wearing off in places. I have lots of bottom-dwelling fish, so I assume this is not good!! I will never buy it again. As it is I'm planning a bigger tank for the fish that are in this one now, and I'll have to buy all new substrate!

Blood worms are also very messy if you forget to put them back in the freezer and leave them on the counter

adding some more!

-dont transport a big (big-ish?) tank without something to secure it down with. i had a 55 sliding all over the place in my moms van :nilly:
-never assume that a craisglist offer that includes free filters will be working filters.
-dark substrate sure does help oscar poo show up. this is good and bad i suppose
-shop around for fish, a lfs wants $6 a piece for RCS, found another place that wants $1.50 a piece
-make friends with lfs owners and find out when their shipment days are
-double check to make sure you're getting the right pellet (if sinking or not)
-you dont need 3 inches of gravel in a tank
-dont say "ill upgrade tanks when i need it" cause you may never upgrade
-the extra money spent on a good tank cover/hood is worth the sense of security.

ill probably add more later.
