So the other day Im at my LFS, one that is discussed in most NE threads, actually made me kind of mad. As I walked down the aisles I noticed that no joke, more than half, probably 2/3s of the fish had some sort of parasite. Some still looked great and others just sat there and did not move. I then see some guys come in who are looking to sell back some fish. The equivalent for one of the fish they had was being sold at the store for $50, the guy offered him $15 for all three of his fish! He then bought a bunch of fish, after the guy recommended he buy at least 10-12 to keep a pack in order, half of which I saw for a fact were sick. I just don't get how people can be in that business and just be so bad at it. The prices are insane, they rip people off, label some fish correctly, and on. It just pisses me off that a store that used to be so cool has turned to a place like this. Maybe its just around me and im in a crappy mood. Sorry to vent just gets me

A store by me is the same way. They regularly get sick fish from the wholesaler and then put them on display. The main problem is that all the tanks are connected. The other problem is the store keeps buying from the same wholesaler. You would think that they would have enough brains to stop dealing with that wholesaler.

Of course, when you offer to sell them healthy fish, they decline saying that they could be diseased.

stores with all tanks connected are always full of issues. even if u find one decent fish its a risk taking it becuase its sharing the water with the powedred ich filled fish in the tank near by. it happens, u cant gt mad at every bad store, if theya re making money they really dont care much about anything else.

We at Fish INC try and keep our stock in the best health. We water change all 200+ tank (we have a lot of tanks that are 100gal +) at least twice per week some more. We quarentine all stock for at least 1 week and everything gets treated. Most of our setups are single, we only have a few central system due to the risk of disease spreading.

Everything is fed at least one per day, on a good quality feed. Most fish do get frozen food and meaty feeds regulary. to keep them in good health

Not many LFS have this quality standard.

I should know i work there.

I got lucky out here and just happen to wonder in to a LFS to look into possibly getting into aquariums. The Owner and his wife were so friendly and knowledgibe that I almost felt bad if I didn't start buying from them. Since that time about 8 months ago I have got many fish from them, all my products, as well as got 2 friends hooked on it and buying from them. So they now take care of us extra well as far as knocking down prices and what not. My roomate jsut spent a little unger a grand on a new tank, salt, life rock, and filter alone this week. They have also held, or as I call it babysat, fish for me for upwards of two weeks for me so that I could get a new tank set up to take them home. Moral is take care of your customers and they will take care of you.

my move down to norfolk has landed me in a good position for new lfs. i have 2 i regularly visit. one is a family run affair and is very good. the staff are very knowledgeable and honest. and the other is wyvale garden centre that has a maidenhead aquatics in it (i think its maidenhead). good quality but not as good as the family run store. but i also have another 3 that are very poor. one loaded my tank with ich that took me 3 weeks to get rid of, the other i just wont buy fish from and the final one is pets at home with whom Boggy, and other uk members, have no doubt had the less than pleasureable experience of visiting.
the point is try and relax about it. you cant let it get to you cos it will drive you mental. i know its hard but the larger places, and the odd family run one, very rarely care about the fish. its definitely something that can discourage you from being in the hobby as you question wether to be a part of a hobby that can be so damn cruel. but then you look at your own fish and your reminded why you love it, especially if they beg for food like any "fluffy" would.

keep the faith mate.
