I've had a sengal bichir now for a week he's about 4 inches long and is in my 150 gallon. The first night I got him he spent the night hanging out at the top. Ever since then he just sits in his cave that he has claimed on the right side of the tank. Now what worrys me is I've read that they need to go to the surface for air more often when there small like mine. However I never see him go to the top for air. I can see him when he's in the cave he looks fine and is breathing fine. Only time I ever see him out is after I feed them and I turn the lights out then he only comes out of the cave if food doesn't fall in his cave which it usually does anyways. Yesturday I did a water change and I always take out all the rocks when I do. He went around ever rock until they were all out then he spent the whole time swimming around the top of the tank and hanging out behind the filter. Like I said he seems fine and is breathing fine no heavy breathing or anything it just worrys me cause he never goes to the surface for air. I know I'm just not seeing it because the tank is right by the couch I set at and his cave is right by me. What do you guys think?

Maybe you are missing it, my polys quickly shoot up to the top and straight back down. I can even hear them splash as they break the surface when Im in bed sometimes.

^agree. Give him time to settle in once he's settled everything should be fine

yes, my little poly shoots straight up breaks the surfaces and takes a big gulp of air...im lucky to see it 3x a day maybe. Don't worry they know to go up to get air and they will keep going up until they get a big gulp. They won't commit suicide haha :D
