So just last week i took my three jags to a lfs to place and make room for a few new texas and red texas. Well another store near it had a little 4 inch fishy labeled as a jag but it did not look right. I went back today and picked it up and had them call the fishes source to find out more info. Result is what i expected it is really a jack dempsey x jag.

Just looked them up and from these pics i posted i would agree. What the pics do not show is the red edge on the top fin and tail or the blue specs starting to develop along the top of its body. Maybe the person was wrong on the jag part of the parentage and it was a cuban. Time will tell as it grows. It was in the tank maybe 5 min before i took these pics so will get a few more over the next couple days as it settles in.

The more pics i look at the wider the range the cubans build and looks seem to be. Do they really vary that much from snub nosed to long sloping nosed and torpedoed body to pretty blocky built in both young juvenile to older adult fish alike?

I would say young female Cuban. You should be able to tell for sure in a few months.

Cuban female you can tell by the red you see on the tip of her fins. I had a breeding pair a few years ago and the female was so nice.

Thanks all on the id. After the heads up from members here on what to look up i found a few sites with info and pics matching this one. Can a moderator go ahead and move this over to the central south american section. From there i will keep updates on her and see how she develops. She is pretty cool with a strong personality already showing after having her less than a day.
