Well 5 years old is not an issue. Are you sure you have a male and female.

might not be a male and female and or it doesnt feel comfortable in its tank were its housed . i found from my pasted breeding convicts is that they breed a little easier when they are housed alone just a pair

I'll try to get you guys a pic.I'm sure its a pair, they did lip-locks and the females tube was showing. They are housed in a 55 gal with 1 boy texas cichlid,1 girl manaugense,1 feather fin up-side down cat,and a girl nicarauguanse.

It is often said that Convicts are the easiest fishes to breed. From my experience they are relatively easy to breed if given the right setup. When I was a convict noob I had problem breeding them as well. The typical advice was put a pair in a tank and they will produce. However, it just didn't work it was a trial and error kinda situation for me for a yr. Then one day I decided to seperate one pair into a ten gallon by themselves bare bottom with a cave decor. Nothing happened, even simulated cooler temp to higher temp. Didn't work. Added gravel to the setup. So ten gallon tank with gravel and a cave decor. They next day the male created a ditch inside the cave builded a fort around the cave decor. The pair stayed in the cave only left it to eat and dash back inside. A week after the initial setup change of adding gravel there were frys all over the tank didn't even realize they had spawned. Ever since I've tried a few different methods and they haven't been so good but this method has turned great results for me. 1 pair of convicts in a tank with gravel and a pot or cave like decor. 1 week in Cooler temps of low 70's then up the temp to 80's and wah lah. Of course feeding them high protein to prep them of course.
