Here is my main poly grow out tank. I think I have a couple ornate pairing, possibly even a prego female.

It's a standard 125 in a "bunkbed" style rack I built with the lower 125 having more polys, a motoro, and a few plecos. The stock on the topic tank is

2ea ornate male (15"+), female (?) (13"+)

2ea sengal sex unknown both around 9" one really fat, the other skinny.
No current pics.. I'll get some

1ea Delhzi sex unknown about 9-10"

1ea Endi haven't checked around 9-10"

Everyone has been doing great. Parameters are great. Water changes on the reg. Had another 12" ornate female who died about a week ago.. Turns out she was prego!!!!

Exactly 12". Brought her to the dr.... For real. The fish dr. George Goulart.
Look him up... Anyway he tells me she most likely passed because she ate too much and being pregnant perhaps complicated things...

I was reading up on another thread recently started about breeding ornate bichir so I wanted some advice... I think I want to separate the two potential parents (if they are
even a pair) so I don't lose another prego female...

I recently picked up for FREE!!!!
5 ea 40L and some other stuff... Man I love craigslist!!! They're all plumbed!! Ready for a system setup..

I took the separators out of two of them and was planning on using one for the poly couple. Some sand, maybe a mop like fixture for eggs.

Do you think they could be a pair?

Should I move them?

Is a 40L big enough? 48"x13.5"x12.5"

I believe the poly on the left is the female. And the male (much more yellow) is on the right.

Here are some videos o the tank. Check em out.

If I am correct and it is a pair and she is pregnant... How long do I have before she would give birth? Ballpark... I can have the system ready by weeks end. Or I have a 120 tall running I was going to move my motoro into shortly.

Would the 120 be better?

I know when my Senegal's spawned I left the pair in the main tank, made a spawning mop out of hunter green yarn(make sure you boil) or dye will leach. Boiling will also make spawning mop sink. The way you sex bichir is by looking at their anal fins, male has a thick and wider anal fin. The are eggs are scattered, female will hopefully release eggs to the male near mop so some eggs will adhere to spawning mop.:)

+1 and it's pretty difficult to actually breed them. It takes a lot of time and effort to put in. Even if you have time and effort the animals have to be able to spawn by themselves. You can do whatever you want but if the animals don's spawn then it's almost pointless. If i'm you i'm gonna wait to set-up and breeding setup until you see something like this from your ornates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEo-Spv0q4c if they don't do this then just wait because all the tank will be is another tank to take care of IMO. Make sure that the male is opening the anal fin to catch eggs. If he's just following her that doesn't always mean breeding. And Polypterus release the eggs like stated above. The eggs you see in her when you cut her open are unfertilized eggs. Just because they have eggs does not always meen they will mate. Sometimes the female will just let them go because of the stress it sometimes puts on them. In other cases some have been known to keep the eggs because they don't want their young (at least as they think) to be eaten by predators. Which usually results in death.

It looks like 2 females because i don't see a distinct anal fin but heres a pic to help you out. IMO it's easier for you to tell in person once you know what your looking for.

Thanks for the advice and comparing and the photo to my fish you may be right... Both females. But then this raises another question.... More about the female that died.

Why would she be carrying eggs with no male partner present?

Would the polys crossbreed? Would she carry due to the presence of a different male? Say a sengal or Delhzi?

The system will get set up either way. I just didn't know if I had to get it done sooner than later.

Thanks again!!

Your poly's look good on that white substrate. Mine's went all pale, thinking of changing into a darker substrate soon...

Ornates look great. I wouldn't put the pleco in the tank though.
