How come when my African Cichlid's spawn and have babies that they grow up to be less colorful than the adults. Is there any way I can make them color up better?

The quality of the fish is one factor. If you have F0's or F1's spawn and have fry you will most likely have a better quality fish. Thats why F0's and F1's usually command a higher price. Or it could be that the particular fish you are spawning just don't have that good of genes and just don't produce the quality of offspring that you want. Food that you are feeding could be a factor as well. My guess is that it is just the quality of fish. For example there are some auoloncara baenschi's out there that have the most amazing yellow and blue coloration and some that aren't that great and you wouldn't spend your money. Just my 2 cents

Honda thanks for helping me out, I kinda' thought that that might be the problem.

Hi all, The main reason would more than likely be the quality of the fish. Best fish to buy would be wild caughts then F1's. I have wild caughts that have breed and the fry start showing colour extremely early. Fish at 2-2,5 cm start showing colour. The main problem is people in-breed too much and this seems to result in poor colour let alone all the other complications that may arise.
:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

Thanks for the info guys I'm gonna try to have to find me some.

Did anyone mention inbreeding as a problem?

Awe they are so cute I'll take 6. (2 yeats later) Oh my goodness I see babies in the tank.

Most people don't realize they came from the same parents. Would you want to hook up with your brother or sister? What would they look like? Weird concept. Buy wild or cull the males and get an adult male later on to breed with your females. JMO.

I dont think inbreeding should ruin the coloration, after all the fancy guppy and betta strains are the result of decades of concentrated inbreeding.I would think if successive generations have less color than wild caughts it must be something lacking in the diet or water chemistry.

I'm sure in the wild fishes inbreed all the time, so it's really hard to know if your FO fish will have great qualities. Unless your down there in the lakes diving with your flashlights and making sure not to let the parents start to inbreed.
