I have noticed that when I do a 25%-50% water change in my 140gal tank that the water is very clear for a day, then it starts to gets foggy, then it's very foggy, then it gets clear again.

Now I have always believed that this change in the way the water appears was do to some change within the filter...but now Im not so sure...

I have a smaller 15gal tank running right now with just a very small corner goldfish bowl drop in filter inside with only a little filter floss inside the filter with an airstone running.

I filled the empty 15gal tank with new tap water,
again it was very clear for a day or so, then turned foggy, then got really foggy, and now is very clear again.

Why does water always do that?

not sure, but it almost sounds like the tank is going through a mini cycle...Someone with more knowledge will tell you for sure....I do 50 % water changes weekly with well water and never have that problem....

Howdy,

Sounds like bacterial bloom. Mostly happens with insufficient biofiltration (as evidenced by your 15 gal). What filter do you have on your 140 gal?

You see thats the thing...

Lets say you tank a 10 gal tank thats new and empty.
now you fill the tank with new tap water.
Next you add only an airstone, no filter no fish...

So you got just 10gal of water being moved by an airstone...

I suggest that you would see the same thing happening!...perhaps?

You would see a week of great clear water
Then the water would turn cloudly'
Then get real cloudy
Then get clear again.
Then be great clear water again...

but why?
