I have a question that might sound a bit strange, but I would appreciate as much input as possible.

How many wild caught severums (all species) have you owned and, of these, how many have y-bar or fork lateral bars?

For me, 7 individuals, 0 with y-bar

It may not be as common as in tank-bred fish, but it does happen. At least it happens with discus. I have seen wild discus come in with fused bars before.

It's mostly a guess on my part. I just don't know how it would happen in tanks and not in the wild. In all the thousands and thousands of fish, chances are it occurs somewhere.

My 1" fry from my green pair show fused bars. Usually it's just the last two bars before the caudal peduncle. They fuse at the top near the dorsal and branch out into two bars at the anal fin, sort of like a wishbone shape. I don't know for certain that it happens in the wild, but I can't see why it would only happen in tank-bred fish? Surely it occurs somewhere in the wild. I've never seen a good explanation as to why it happens, but discus folks seem to think we see it enhanced in tanks because of line breeding or inbreeding.

well that's exactly what I want to find out - whether there's a difference and, if so, why....

When I was younger back in the 80s I'd see many adult severums at the LFS, sevs you might think were wild ones, and I never remember seeing Y-bars. The green I have now (an LFS mutt that sort of looks like he might have some Rotkiel in him) has a Y-bar.

I'm curious to hear if any of the collectors or vendors who deal with hundreds of wild fish have observed any with Y-bars, though I'd think most of those wilds would be juvies, and my particular severum didn't show the Y until he was maybe a year old.

I've had 4 wild pairs and 0 y bars.

Youright Boys.

You've seen my stock list in previous threads, but out of all the sevs i've got, only one species shows Y bars (evident in the parents at the bolton aquarium too) are the fish caught from belem.

I cant post pictures im afraid as their hosted on another forum, and MFK mods delete them after i post. Go figure eh?

Even then, only 2 out of the 4 show the Y'ing. (although several others in the hobby, all from belem, show the same markings here in the UK)
