are ebjd blue when there very very small (1" ) or are they blue-white-maybe a little orangeish......like the ones at my lfs....do they take a while to stablise?

When they're small, they tend to be a mixture of cream and blue colors. As they get bigger, the blue tends to become more pronounced. Water conditions, stress, and their place in the pecking order will also have an effect. The dominant fish will tend to be darker blue than the others. Some strains will become more "blotchy" as they reach the 5"+ size. Other strains are very blue all the time, even for the non-dominant fish. For some strains the blue is turquoise, other strains are a deeper blue. Lots of variations. What you're describing sounds pretty standard if the fish are about 1" in size.
