What's better to use in my sump? Should I fill it to the top with matrix or bio balls?I've heard that matrix holds 5 times the bacteria but i've also heard that the matrix will get clogged up really bad if you pile alot of it up together.I'm also wondering if matrix has to be fully submerged at all times or can I just let splash run through it from the plate with the holes in it?

I just built a new wet/dry using matrix. The stuff is supposed to be great and does yield a higher bacteria surface area. As far as clogging goes, just get yourself a couple of large filter socks. I have one on the pipe right before the drip plate and then one is a spare. Then I just switch them out once a week and throw the dirty one in the wash machine with a 10% bleach and water mix and comes out looking brand new. Low maintenance and works great. The socks catch nearly everything and my bio media stays clean. Just be sure to change them when they get dirty.

k bye

I decided that i'm probably just gonna have two custom sumps made. I'm probably just gonna run alot of bio balls. My friends with big tanks like mine do,so i'll probably do the same. I was hoping people that have ran matrix for a year or two would respond for I could hear the pros and cons of matrix vs bio balls.

Bio balls are great too. I have them on my 125 that has been running for 8 months or so and my brothers tank we just installed the wet dry with the matrix. So eventually we can see how they compare. My bio balls are running quite well and I expect them to continue to do so. The pond matrix in the other tank has only been running for 5 days or so. So far so good. Good luck with yours

k bye

If the media is exposed to air and the water trickles through the media go with the bio balls. If the media is submerged in the water go with the matrix.
